The Challenge

Transforming a bricks and mortar franchise with design and technology
Use design to enhance the product for staff and customers
Improve business operations
Instil and maintain design consistency

Based in Dallas, KidStrong is a science-based kids training program aimed at helping parents raise strong, confident, and high-character kids. I joined the newly formed technology department to develop digital products that support the business and enhance the customer experience.

Overview

Identifying where digital can help a bricks and mortar franchised business.

KidStrong is a kids training programme for kids from 18months to 11 years old. Focusing on cognitive, physical and character development, they run weekly classes at their centres across the US. These classes are delivered by trained Coaches informed by a monthly curriculum curated by an expert team.

Design consistency

Creating a design system.

With three distinct digital products across different platforms, maintaining visual consistency was paramount. I oversaw the development of the design system covering mobile, tablet, and TV interfaces.

Design leadership

Managing and running a team through design mentorship.

In the first year, I worked solo, developing three digital products concurrently. As the workload grew, we expanded the team to three designers, whom I managed and mentored.

Identifying the issues

Working with me

How I tend to work

My work typically involves the creation of websites, digital products, software prototypes, animations and more.

My real strength tends to be around the ideation and prototyping stage of products. I have helped many clients realise their ideas and bring them to life. This informs stakeholders on what they are getting, allows for focused and effective user testing, and is invaluable in informing engineering on what to build.

Engaging with stakeholders, staff and customers

With over 80 centers across the US, it was evident that KidStrong was successful. As the sole designer on the team, I initially identified opportunities and needs for digital products. This included conducting workshops with stakeholders, surveying staff and customers, and observing the class experience in a centre.

Through this research we identified the need for three new products:

KSTV

Assisting coaches in class and delivering consistent, memorable experiences.

Coach app

Supporting and improving daily operations.

KidStrong Parent

Enhancing the experience for parents.

Identifying the issues

Engaging with stakeholders, staff and customers

With over 80 centres across the US they were clearly doing plenty right. As the sole designer in the team I began by identifying where there were opportunities and needs for digital products . This involved workshops with stakeholders, surveying staff and customers as well as observing the class experience in a centre.

Through this research we identified the need for three new products:

KSTV

To assist coaches in class and deliver consistent, memorable experiences.

Coach app

To support and Improve daily operations.

KidStrong Parent

To enhance the experience for parents.

Three very different products

The apps I designed for KidStrong over the last three years. Each serving a different audience but working together to improve business performance, and client experience.

KSTV

TV App, Unity
Identifying where digital can help a bricks and mortar franchised business.

KSTV is a visual aid that delivers the curriculum of content to kids. It also assists the coach in delivering consistent, memorable classes, every day, across the franchise.

Enhancing the experience for parents

To support the weekly programme I designed an app for parents, giving them access to their kids progress, sending them class photos, and many other features.

The Coach App

iPad App, Flutter
Managing and running the experience.

When I joined KidStrong,  classes and kids progress were managed on paper cards. I designed an app that is now used to manage day to day operations for all centres, revolutionising the quality of experience for staff and customers.
