The Challenge

Improve the operations of centres
Help coaches deliver consistent classes
Enhance the class experience
Maintain design consistency

Based in Dallas-US, KidStrong is a science-based kids training program designed to help parents raise strong, confident, high-character kids. With over 120 centres across the US, and 44,000+ paying members they are an extremely successful franchise.

When I joined KidStrong classes were managed on paper cards. A year later and all classes, kids progress and more were managed through The Coach App.

Discovery

Who are our users, and what are their needs?

This project began with workshops, interviews, and on-site observation of classes, gaining firsthand insights into the needs of coaches and centre owners. This allowed us to build user personas to work from.

Understanding user needs

Identifying the core journey

From the research a journey map of class was created, identify the core features of the product required to run a class.
With this I worked with stakeholders to prioritise the features for our MVP.

Prototyping and testing

Validating design

With this being an internal product I recruited a team of coaches to test out early designs and prototypes. It was important to create a group that reflected the diverse variety of ability and understanding that the represents the 400+ team of coaches.

Listening and learning

Creating a culture of iteration

With an MVP app in circulation and being used daily across 120 centres, by over 400 coaches, we had a wealth of users to engage with and learn from. We conducted regular research sessions and created a Slack channel to gather feedback. This data was synthesised to identify patterns and opportunities to improve.

Core features

Below are a selection of the core features of the app.

Managing classes

A smarter and more efficient class management

We identified the need for a class schedule and summary based on input from coaches and center owners. This clear view provided them with greater control over daily operations.

Running classes

Making coaches lives easier

KidStrong classes are meticulously choreographed experiences. Our goal with The Coach App was to serve as an assistant, helping coaches stay on track and ensuring consistent delivery of classes.

Up do date information

Access to customer details

Research showed the need for access to kids' details during classes. We added kid and parent information alongside progress tracking, allowing coaches to interact confidently with parents.

Consistent class experience

Working with KS-TV to deliver consistent classes

During a class there are key moments that need to be delivered consistently. To ensure the coach has full control we sync the Coach App with the TV.

This allows coaches to:
Check-in kids on TV.
Dynamically add awards to kids for the class Awards Ceremony.

Class photos

A simple idea with big impact

One of the initial ideas I implemented was delivering class photos to parents. Coaches capture key moments in class, tag the photos with the correct kids, and they are then sent to the Parent App, where they populate the Moments timeline.
